Doohamlet O'Neills Ladies Football

Brief History

1990-2006

Doohamlet Ladies football first saw the light of day in April 1990. A group of highly motivated players, managed and trained by Mary Connolly and Brendan Malone were to set out on a path of discovery and comradeship, which would endure for over 10 years. Throughout this period of time many victories were gained, and many disappointments also, with every match providing a new challenge.

Many people have helped over the years to train and manage Doohamlet ladies, such as Patsy Connolly, Cyril Duffy, Peter Finnegan, Jim Connolly, and Cathal Loughman, showing dedication and commitment beyond the call of duty. Through the years, many outstanding players wore the Doohamlet jersey with pride, but one player stands out from the crowd, with an impressive 5 All-Ireland medals under her belt. Rosie Hughes played at county level from U-14 level, right up to Senior level, and many remember Rosie as a small 12 year old, taking her place on our full forward line.

The pinnacle of the team’s success was winning the Junior Championship in 1999, managed and trained by Martin Walshe and Kieran Brennan, which gained the team senior status. Many of the players had been with the team from its original conception, but unfortunately there was a scarcity of younger players coming on, and the club disbanded two years later.   However, it was reformed in 2004, at U-14 level, with the help of Pauline Gilsenan, John Gilsenan, Brendan Malone, and Bernie Mc Guinness. This has continued, cumulating this year in the formation of a Ladies team, U-16, and U-12’s.

With fresh talent comes the hope of rejuvenating Ladies football in Doohamlet, and re-igniting the optimism and excitement, which always surrounded every game.
